Is It Obama? Or Is It Us?

Editor's Shot with Gun Digest Editor Kevin Michalowski

We can blame it on Obama, but as was pointed out to me in a recent letter, gun control is a symptom of a great problem. I got this note from someone I really respect… read on.

Kevin,

I appreciate the intent of your column, “Tell ‘em what you think”. However, I think it misses the mark. The problem is not Mayor Richard Daley or his views on firearms. The problem is the view of the people he represents. Millions of Chicago citizens long ago turned their backs on the Second Amendment. Mayor Daley is but a symptom of their views. It is more than merely unlikely that anything could be done to persuade him to embrace the Constitution.

In connection with that thought a quote was sent to me recently that I found especially eloquent and thought you might find it useful as well.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency.

“It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

“The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America .

Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool.

It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

So, it is the electorate that allowed this to happen. The electorate is us.

Sure, you and I didn’t vote for the Idiot-in-Chief now living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., but we allowed his election. We allowed his election through a combination of actions and inaction. And it is time to undo what we have done.

The actions we took that allowed our country to fall so far that it would elect a man like Obama include anything that makes gun owners look like the reckless, combative goofballs that anti-gunners make us out to be. Yes, you have the First Amendment right to say what you want, but when your actions reflect poorly on gun owners, you are part of the problem. Straighten up. Your freedom is on the line. If you do something just because you can with no concern for how it impacts gun owners, you are helping Obama and his ilk.

Our inaction is even worse. It is high time we put up or shut up. If you are not actively working on a political campaign, get started. If you don’t have time, donate money. Call your legislators, at all levels, and politely tell them what you think. Write letters. Join a gun club. Join the NRA. Join the CCRKBA. Join the SAF. Join the NSSF. If you don’t know what these associations stand for, look them up online. If you have questions about them, email us here and ask.

We have the chance to tell the nation we don’t like the direction Obama is taking us. If we don’t capitalize on that chance we could see things get a lot worse before they get better. No one wants that.

Now get to work. We have a lot to undo.

Good Shooting,
