If I were to guess which gun company has been responsible for the demise of more boss toms, it would be a toss-up between Remington and Mossberg, with the nod probably going to the latter. There’s a reason so many hunters carry Mossbergs, or two actually. They’re affordable and they work. New for this year, the company is fitting several of their shotguns, including the 535 ATS Turkey, with harmonic dampers from Mathews. Yes, that’s a company more known for its bows, but they pioneered vibration reduction and now shotguns get that treatment, with the insert combining with an elastomer recoil pad to reduce felt recoil from heavy 3½ turkey loads by as a much as 20 percent. The 22-inch barrel is fitted with rifle-style fiber-optic sights with a double-extra-full turkey choke screwed in. Mossy Oak Break-Up camo. ($547;
