I bought a Mossberg 590 SPX that actually came from Mossberg new with an Ontario M9 bayonet in the box as well. It mounts right onto the lug/near the end of the magazine tube.

Tweak is right. I missed that in researching the evolution of the original Buckmaster 184 into the M9 bayonet. Thanks for catching that!

The handle of the M9 may be hollow, as therein rides the rod that connects the latch to the blade but it’s certainly not hollow for storage.

@biteme, the barrel band on the 590 that holds the front sling swivel had a bayonet lug on it.

The original pupose of bayonets was to eliminate the need for pikemen to protect musketmen from cavalry. This endured up until the early 20th century. When the British adopted the SMLE to replace the “Long Lee” rifle, they also introduced a shorter bayonet. Fairly soon after, a longer bayonet was adopted because the infantry complained that the shorter blade, along with the shorter rifle, did not give them enough “reach” to counter a mounted cavalryman.

Many of the military versions of the Mossberg were equipped to accept the M9 bayonet on the forward end of the magazine tube. I don’t know if there are aftermarket mounts or not, but the shotguns are out there if you look for them.

Please advise other than welding it to the barrel where can you get adapters the fit it to the Mossberg 590?
