The paint or whatever they put on it would not be bad for a cheap knockoff gun company to do but a company like Remington should have been able to do better. They should have at least parkerized it if not an actually bluing job. The updated sights were a nice touch. The firing pin safety was a bit ridiculous though. The 1911 is a combat weapon, if you are too uncomfortable with a combat weapon and feel you need unnecessary safeties like the firing pin block or a magazine disconnect you should probably shop around for a different style gun.

I checked one out this summer while 1911 shopping and found the R1 to be a bit tacky. As a Marine we were issued the latest of WWII technology...in Vietnam... but for the life of me I don't remember if my 1911 was of Remington manufacture.Hit the target high center of mass and it dropped without nary a twitch. Lots faster than drilling little pinholes with the 5.56. Lots.Thank you for the well done article on one of my favorite handguns.

Part (most) of the reason I’m all but deaf is being skinny enough to fit inside of spiderholes back in the good old days and make big booms with my 1911.
